See the real–life 'Downton Abbey', location of the popular British TV series which has enjoyed a world–wide following and a clutch of television and broadcasting awards gathered over the life of the show. Extensively used for both interiors and exteriors in the filming, Highclere Castle is the ancestral home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. We take you for a tour round the house and grounds that formed the backdrop to so many memorable scenes of breathless passion, grumpy butlers and skulduggery in the scullery.

Included in this break are coach travel and overnight hotel accommodation with a 3–course evening meal and full English breakfast, admission to Highclere Castle and grounds, plus a visit to Warwick with optional half–price admission to the castle.

Monday   From a morning pick–up in your local area we travel by coach to Warwick, where we stop for some free time. Warwick has some original Tudor and Jacobean buildings and has often been used as a period film location. Worth a look is the Lord Leycester Hospital, never actually a hospital but a delightfully drunken cluster of timber–framed buildings crowding round the West Gate and dating from the 14th century.

Enjoy the city at your leisure or take advantage of our half–price castle admission ticket (at a supplement of £13.20pp). Warwick castle, built in 1068, has survived generations of aristocratic plots, schemes, murders, wars, sieges, anarchy, beheadings and betrayal worthy of anything from TV's Game of Thrones. Bristling with battlements, portcullises, and murder holes, it's been a huge tourist attraction since Victorian times and is today considered to be one of Britain's "Top 10 historic houses and monuments" and was voted Britain's best castle by the Good Britain Guide in 2003. It was painted five times by the celebrated painter Canaletto, making it the artist's most often represented building in Britain, its lawns and gardens were landscaped by Capability Brown, it has a 22 ton siege catapult in its grounds, one of the largest anywhere, and its collection of armoury is regarded as second only to that of the Tower of London. We continue on to our hotel in the late afternoon in time to check in before dinner.

Tuesday   We start the day with a full English breakfast and then head for 'Downton Abbey' as seen on TV, and in the flesh. Highclere Castle is an imposing Jacobethan house with interiors of ornate gold leaf and stucco, heavy velvet and age–matured mahogany, surrounded by elegant gardens overlooking the Kennet Valley and woodland packed with follies including Heaven's Gate and an Etruscan temple. There's an Egyptian exhibition too, featuring rare antiquities from excavations by the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and commemorating his world headline discovery in 1922, with Howard Carter, of the tomb of Tutankhamen. We will spend 3 - 4 hours here, then set off for home in the mid–afternoon.
